When the cadets had the time off, there was a big secret party that was going to go down and only a select amount of people knew where and when this was going to happen. Naturally, Carey Mahoney was one of the people who knew where and when it was going to take place. Neat less to say, Barbara had plans on using his time off to see his family. Lieutenant Harris' goons,Copland and Blanks, harassing Barbara into telling them where the party is going to be. So Barbara asked Mahoney about the party. Instead of giving him the REAL directions to the party, he gave him the directions to the Blue Oyster Bar, which lead to Copland and Blanks getting tricked into going there instead of Barbara. Did Leslie Barbara dodge Mahoney's prank? After all he DID trick him into going into Lassard's house scaring Lassard's wife.

Been a while, but didn't Mahoney ask if he wanted to go, but Barbara said he was just wondering? I always thought Mahoney suspected someone, possibly Copeland and Blanks, were using Barbara to figure out its location, so Mahoney lied because he knew Barbara would tell them. I don't think Mahoney believed Barbara had any intention of going to the party.

Not only did Mahoney not intend to have Barbara go there, it's in the timing of his answer that the genius of Mahoney shines through. You cant fool a fool, or play a player. Blanks and Copeland are idiots.
When Mahoney asks "Well then why are you asking?" and Barbara answers, Mahoney, without skipping a beat, says "Sure, no problem, it's at the Blue Oyster Bar. On Howell."
So smooth, so present in the moment and on top of his game, he gave Barbara no reason at all to suspect it was a lie.
