I've never watched this version. I have a fondness, though, for the version with Michael York. I was very, very young when it came out but I vividly remember seeing the trailer for it before one of the other movies I watched,. It left a giant impression on me. Later, when I actually saw the movie I wasn't quite so impressed.
This is one of those stories that wants to be more shocking than it is. And because it's so difficult to portray the animal-to-human conversion convincingly, it's nearly impossible to take seriously. From what I've seen of the Kilmer/Brando film, their performances don't help sell it, either. The documentary on the making of the movie has all but persuaded me to give the film a wide berth.
