I mean come on, there is just no way an properly armed force cannot deal with slow moving creatures in this 1978 movie. It is not like they are impossible to kill. If you know you can use head shot to kill, a properly trained army even with temporary barricade (or perimeter, depends on the building placement) should be able to stop thousands of these things.
The 2004 one make a bit more sense because they just charge at you and don't feel pain or tiring.
Well, I guess the point of the movie is about desperation and apocalypse but I just cannot stand the fact this is simply not serious enough to be an apocalypse.
Alien invasion and mass virus attacks are pretty stupid too but at least they make more sense.

I guess the thing is that they're in disarray. The opening scenes with police, special forces and military being awol, killing civvies and other personnel etc shows that order breaks down quick. A bit like suggested in world war z book, most people would go awol to be with/protect their families.
The rapid loss of civilisation at the beginning is very realistic.
Keep in mind, anyone who dies, no matter what the cause will turn.

Good point. I did sort of think the same as the OP when I first watched this film.
