Beth je dobrovolnicí na lince důvěry - patří k malé armádě, která každou noc v Americe telefonuje a přijímá hovory od nejrůznějších lidí, kteří se cítí osamělí, zlomení a beznadějní. Za poslední rok se z přílivu stala tsunami. Jak Beth prochází svou směnou, sázky rostou: je to noc, kdy někoho ztratí? Zachrání někoho? Nakonec vyjde najevo Bethin vlastní příběh, který odhalí, proč to dělá. Po celou dobu zůstáváme s ní: nasloucháme, utěšujeme, spojujeme - dáváme svět dohromady, jeden steh po druhém.
