While Lars von Trier's films are always a matter of taste, I have enjoyed those I had seen up until now, Breaking the Waves and Melancholia in particular. Just caught up with this 1991 effort and found it a slog to get through. The acting is dreadfully wooden, and it manages to take a fascinating set-up - young American moves to immediately post-WW2 Germany to take up a job as a train conductor, unwittingly becomes involved with pro-nazi terrorists - and twist it into something dull and rambling.
One plus - the visuals are frequently stunning, and held me back from turning the thing off. Primarily black and white with occasional dashes of colour and some striking art direction, it's rather beautiful to behold. But it's all in the service of nothing. A major disappointment. 4/10
