Those gosh darn tootin' teens and their marygeewanna! Them smoking joint after joint and getting stoned! Haven't any of them seen "Reefer Madness"??? Do they not still show that in schools? Where does my tax dollar go, for chrissake? These kids should know: Marijuana is a gateway drug! And it always leads to murder.
They shoulda been doing cocaine and ecstasy and drinking Tequila with Red Bull! Woulda been a whole different film... Mandy Lane Loves All.
Kidding aside, anyone else feel there was an overemphasis on the weed & joint shots in the first portion of the film? Wasn't just one or two... and the camera would pause for several frames on one joint, later, use a shallow depth of field while focusing on another, then another that rolls off a table, and...
I'm seeing it as overkill in establishing their 'party' nature--point was made with just 1/5 of those shots--as I have a hard time believing that pot would still be used today as such a blatant symbol to demonize the teens, more so in a teen-type slasher. Sure, painting them as wastoids helps justify Mandy Lane's actions, but the marijuana focus makes me wonder if there's an anti-pot/drug message we're suppose to get but didn't come through?
Was it just a maladroit method of shifting the p.o.v. to Mandy's judgmental attitude, reinforcing the "pure" motif through her avoidance in spite of the clear overabundance available?
Definitely not a masterpiece. It fails on several levels, but also offers plenty; the cinematography alone is quite sublime for the day/dusk shots, and the soft focus and way the sun floods some nature/Mandy shots help create a pastoral effect solidifying the mythified untouched-beauty that, we're told, Mandy represents, which I think is pulled off quite well--not an easy thing to do. There's also an atmosphere and mood at the end that I really like but would seriously have a hard time describing (atypical for me), and, yes, that cow pit probably figures in it.

Typical behavior of teenagers, absolute desires, when other needs are satisfied ("gambling"). Mandy is like a cherry on a cake, everyone wants it, but she is only one and she does not meet expectations.
Otherwise, each viewer will be able to see what is closer to him (sins were invented and classified long time ago).
