When Rachel is returning home it seems he was influencing a car dealer and air line attendant. If he could do that why not do the same with Judd when he told Lewis about the ground or made Lewis decline the invite?

I don't think he could possess people simply make suggestions. As far as telling about the sour ground, he did more than suggest, he actually showed up and told him not to go!
