I used to think that Madonna was the star, and she did a good job, but after listening to the newest broadway recording with Ricky Martin as the role of narrator, I realise just how talented Antonio is in this role.
Ricky Martin sings the songs, whereas Antonio delivers the emotion and the story of each song. I had never realised how much storytelling he delivers until I heard Ricky's version.
Then I listened to another version on spotify and again, nowhere close to the emotion. Particularly the song 'Oh What a Circus', you hear how much Antonio is mocking the spectacle of Evitas death, whereas Ricky just sings it.
As for Madonna, she was said not to have a good voice by critics at the time, but I think she really delivered the fragility of Evita, which is the storytelling as well.

I'm sorry but I thought that movie was terrible. I really don't know what possessed Antonio to be in it. Madonna has no vocal talent whatsoever. I've heard Madonna sing her own songs better than what see did in this movie. I could barely sit through the first 30 minutes of the film. I have no idea why the Academy awarded that song You Must Love Me. She won the Golden Globe for her performance. Her acting was good but her singing wasn't. Weird.

Madonna is a good singer if the songs suit her.
