That was the scene that really shocked me as a teenager when I watched it. Even though Raiders of the Lost Ark had its share of violence, that scene in Temple really stood out as gross and it felt out of character to me. And the scene kept ramping up the disgusting foods. from eyeballs in the soup, to "Snake Surprise," and finally chilled monkey brains. Ugh. It felt like a series of food-eating dares you'd challenge each other with as children.
I disliked the movie for many years due to the gross-out scenes and the replacement of Marion by the irritating Willie Scott.
Shocking scary as a child: the whole sacrifice ritual - the cage, removing of heart then lowered into the lava pit - really scared me I was like 6-7 yrs old, was just playing on TV. Took me many years to watch it again

This, for sure. As a 7 year-old I'd already gotten my first dose of horror films so I wasn't that freaked, but it was still pretty shocking and probably the darkest thing I experienced in a theater at the time.
The crocodiles must have been really hungry to want to eat Mola Ram.
SPOILER BELOW -
This touches on my #2 most shocking scene: the death of Mola Ram. Shock images of Mola's bald head turning red as it scrapes against the cliff's wall while he falls from the severed bridge, culminating in him being eaten by the ravenous crocs, spinning around in the water with delight from their meal.
I remember watching this movie in the theater. I was with a cousin who was five years younger than me. He got really sick and almost threw up during the dinner scene.

Yeah, the ritual sacrifice was kind of freaky when I saw it as a kid.
