If the title is already added as a regular title in any form it should not be added as an alternative. So you are correct about that.

Just to make sure I know what you mean before I investigate Guibaa: Are there systems that can't read Zufällig allmächtig? And that's why Zufaellig allmaechtig must be added to the alternative titles?

Zufällig allmächtig is right, the other one is wrong, in Germany we use ä,ü and ö, so the alternative title is wrong and I don't know about any issues to get the titles I'm going over the edits, and there are more duplicates, titles added as regular and alternative I've corrected them, it wasn't a problem with the german spelling, all titles were added also as alternative

Thanks for looking into is. Still curious to see if WaLLY has any information about why the strange alternative titles are needed. That is, are there really users out there who can't get the title Zufällig allmächtig to their systems?

I tested all apps I know so far on PC and mobile and there are no issues, nevertheless I think we cannot add wrong titles to all movies if there is one system which cannot read it, and Guibaa only changed this one, maybe by mistake and if the "Umlaute" would be a known issue I think they would have been reported in the past

I think you are correct. The alternative title was actually first added by this user: https://www.themoviedb.org/account/Sor/changes

Might be worth taking a look at those changes at some point.

I've corrected all the entries of Sor now and will have a look for the future

hey guys'n'gurlz, i added alot of the ae,oe,ue stuff and also ss for ß. problem is that alot of software seem to mess it up with german language even if you set the language to german. in most of the softwares like plex tv they sometimes find the title and sometimes not. with a collection of 100 movies you have to take your time to correct 50 of them. BUT if you use these german alternatives it works fine!! so i did add a lot as "alternative"! but there is no sense adding alternativeswith the same text in the same language. but we will have a problem here if you only kill the doublettes in the db. maybe you kill things like we have here!!! i did this with cause!

yamj same issue there! nfo files do not work with german umlaute without using special descriptions etc. so the title "zufällig..." does not work with it.

I have still no problems with plex or other softwares and I really are not a friend of wrong spelling, for example I cannot add Elfis Prisley as an alternative name to Elvis Presley even some software will not get his name

And I think if the software has the german language implented that should work

great example. yours tells us about imperfection of human. mine is about linguistic peculiarities. but hey, its me who tested about 10k of movies in german language but i'm still a rookie. thanks anyways...

Hi WaLLY,

We definitely want to enforce the proper character sets native to the language as the officially translated text. If a certain app in the wild doesn't support them then they should fix their app ;) Internationalization is not a simple job, I've spent a lot of time making sure TMDb handles it properly. That's why both of these searches work properly when the only title added is "Zufällig allmächtig":

https://www.themoviedb.org/search?query=Zufällig+allmächtig
https://www.themoviedb.org/search?query=Zufaellig+allmaechtig

But it's important that as a database we don't needlessly duplicate data when the problem doesn't originate here. We've had our fair share of workarounds for problems that originate here but this doesn't really feel like one since support for these characters should be handled properly.
