Discuss Cast Away

Start could have been a little bit shorter and better, and I didn't like the end much, but the bulk of the film was good. I like that they did plenty of character building early on and you get used to him living a normal life, because it makes him trying to survive on the island more of a big deal. You know he is just a business executive type so surviving on an island is going to be hard. But I thought the stuff with him in Russia could have been a lot better, it seemed like a waste of time having him shouting at the staff and the conflict with the translator etc. That could have been anything else and would have been better. The stuff on the island was good. It was weird he didn't try to make a fire sooner, or open all the packages sooner, or make a fishing rod, and that he cut his feet up so badly before deciding to make some shoes, etc. But mostly it was good. I liked him figuring stuff out.

The ending was so contrived. I was enjoying it up until he got rescued, and then I am glad they at least didn't give it a basic happy ending. But I thought it was weird how it panned out with the girlfriend. She kisses him passionately and says he is the love of her life, and clearly she is his, but he walks away. That makes no sense. I could understand it if she had a full blown family, but all she had was a little baby who would have no clue about any of this, and the husband who seems like a crappy person anyway. I think in reality the girlfriend would have left her new husband and married him instead. The baby would grow up with divorced parents like a billion other people do. But anyway, he leaves her and then goes to deliver the parcel and then stands on the crossroads wondering where to go, like the crossroads in his life. Zzz... That was so forced. And the redhead babe shows up and you don't get to see how it ends. I don't like this trend of having unspoken endings. Yes I can imagine various outcomes but the whole point of a film is to tell a story, I could have just imagined the whole thing and not bothered watching, at least give me something. The ending just seemed rushed and half baked.

There was also the 'message' that they shoved in there. About how random things can affect your life and you have to try to survive. It was kinda deep. He had bad things happen like most people do in their lives, and has to dig deep and find the strength to survive. Everyone can relate to this when they lose family and friends etc. So it was a decent message. And also how random things happen like the sail showing up on the beach and how it pans out with his girlfriend and how you again just make the best of what hand you are dealt. I kinda like the message but it all felt a bit forced and rushed.

Overall I liked it :P
