Discusión They Live

I like how the "message" for lack of a better term doesn't even require the aliens. We're doing everything that's in the movie to ourselves already, which I'm sure was the point. Roddy sure was no Shakespearean actor but he had good chemistry with Keith David. And if South Park goes to the effort to recreate the fight down to the exact blows you know you made an impact!

When Bush 2 was elected a second time under weird circumstances, I suspected that things were very close to the situation in "They Live". Now that Trump The Dump has been elected, I'm sure of it.

As for Roddy's acting, I thought it was great. IMHO, he was quite beleivable. I despised his wrestling personna, but I really liked him as an actor.

I adore this movie. Roddy's nonexistent acting ability worked for him. He and Keith David together were gold.

It has the best ad-libbed line EVER, and the best ad-libbed fight EVER.

It is fun to watch a film like this and then observe society. People getting their bland kitchens replaced every few years. Kids spending a fortune on basic footwear because it has a certain logo on it. Gated communities. Private schools and hospitals. Nakedly politicised news networks owned by and protecting those of extreme wealth, constantly peddling the evils of taxation of 'wealth generators'. A public who actually pay for the privilege of being force fed this nonsense. Mass anger at anyone daring to promote a third political party that might present an alternative to the corporatist norm.

Where the film really hits home is identifying the type of people who will betray their fellow man just to get a bit of money or to perversely feel good about themselves. And those too fragile, dumb-headed or anxious to even think about the status quo, never mind challenge it at the ballot box. Like so many turkeys voting for Christmas as life expectancy flatlines, working hours increase and job security becomes something your grandparents used to talk about.

Happy 2020 y'all! :D

Nolan-Hoeksema was horrendously off-the-mark back in '04, when she deemed overthinking to be a a woman's issue , predominantly

I think 'idolise unthinking' was one of the subliminal messages behind one of the advertising hoardings. Or was it 'suppress thought due to personal insecurities'?

I really enjoyed Roddy Piper in this! I remember reading that he said he cried while watching The Wrestler... what an open, unpretentious, easygoing guy. I was barely familiar with him or his work, but I was really affected when I heard that he died.
