Discussão Candy Land

I watched this as a double feature after Knock at the Cabin, and apparently by random chance the themes of both movies are quite related. Both deal with sudden intrusion of what seems to be a religious cult into the life of a "family", and how that intrusion affects that family's life and reality in general.

The difference is, that in the case of Shyamalan's movie the religious cult, that initiates the events of this story and moves the plot towards the final direction, is basing all of their actions on underlying religious origins, which are slowly revealed and slowly presented as basic truth. And their truth eventually becomes reality itself and proves their righteous sacrifice. There is no mentioning and discussion in the movie why the brutal sacrifices are needed for their purpose and why there is a justification of human sacrifice at the first place.

For the Candy Land, the reality is much closer to the reality we know and it is not something that makes sense to religious cults. The cult in that story is trying to convince people that their reality is true, but the movie does not take their side and do not take their believes as basic truth. The cult is trying to convince others to repent and to accept the redemption by giving fliers and by speeches on the street, which is met with ridicule and laughter. The family is not convinced at all and their reality of danger and violence is much stronger than anything this cult is trying to convey to them. And this lack of ability to prove their fanatism to others forces the extreme side of the cult to do something drastic and force their truth on others by extreme violence. And that happens while the rest of the cult is unable to affect anyone and decides that the only way they can prove their truth, even to themselves first, is to perform an ultimate sacrifice, quite similar to what happens in Shyamalan's movie. But while Knock at the Cabin oversteps the reality and goes to the religious truths beyond it, Candy Land stays only inside the harsh reality and shows the sacrifice from that vantage point.

Candy Land is a small independent movie, the violence and brutality in it has no purpose or meaning, it's just a reality and what it can do to people. Great stuff.
