Discuss Cleopatra

I've loved this movie ever since a was a child. I thought that Antony was an alcoholic fool, Rex Harrison was great as Julius Caesar, and Elizabeth Taylor was okay.

What is your opinion of this Classic film?

Saw it when it came out in the theaters. It played at the 'Cinerama' theater, there were big glossy programs and everything (I was 10). To me it was a very entertaining movie. Of course they played fast & loose with some of the history but it is a decent film.

@bratface wink Yes, you're absolutely right about it being an entertaining movie. I shouldn't have been mean about Elizabeth Taylor. She was a lot better in the part of the movie that shows Cleopatra's relationship with Julius Caesar. What did you think about that part of the movie?

Well as I said, they played fast & loose with some of the history. But her scenes with Harrison weren't my favs. I've only seen it from beginning to end a few times. I should try to see it again. But I think that anybody who likes this film should have the opportunity to see it on the big screen.

@bratface :Oh, playing fast and loose with the facts history wise is an understatement! Joe Mankowitiz (who I adore, he was a genius!) didn't mention that Anthony had at least 2 wives and 3 children before he met Cleopatra, that C & A had 3 children together, 2 before he married Cornelia ( I believe he had 2 with her) and 1 afterward, that Martin Landau wasn't actually there :-), and I'm pretty damn sure that there was no way Cleopatra could bring all those things in her Roman parade from Egypt to Rome (although I'll be the first to admit it was cool looking).

It would be nice if I could see it on the big screen the way that you did.

Well that is one of the few good things about being really old, I have been able to see a lot of good films when they were released. I'm not a big fan of theaters anymore though, the only films I have seen in the theater the last few years are movies that need to be seen on the big screen, like the last few Bond films, etc. Movies like that should be viewed on a big screen first. Most other films I wait until they come out on BluRay (happens pretty quick now) and either buy them or get them from the library.

@bratface : Sometimes when I'm not sure if I want to see a movie in the theater, I wait until it comes out on Redbox. That way, if it's dumb, then I've only wasted two dollars.

Maria, I have never tried Redbox (or the other ones), didn't like that I would have to return it the next day, also I just couldn't bring myself to give my credit card details to just anyone. I have found that Target has most 'big name' movies for a reasonable price. Most of the movies I have were purchased at Target for $5.00 to $10.00. The only movies I usually can't find at Target are foreign films, those I just buy through Amazon. I miss the old 'video stores', there were quite a few in my town that carried a lot of obscure foreign films, you can't find those films in a Redbox/DVDXpress machine.

@bratface sunglasses That is very true. One of the reasons that I like Redbox is because some of the movies that I wanted to see but either I never got around to seeing them in the theater (Arrival, Passengers, The Great Wall, etc.), or lesser known movies that I wanted to see (MI5 aka Spooks: The Greater Good, and Dragon Blade, the first R-rated Jackie Chan movie).
