how did the stylized "Se7en" become the way we refer to this film?
Dunno, but it's all but guaranteed that us moderns will find a way to attribute the spelling of this movie to racism/sexism/classism/ableism/The White Male CIS Hegemony
I wouldn't. Must suck to live in such abject fear of progress that you see issues that aren't there. I'd say this is even worse than when you think people inject racism/sexism/classism/ableism/white male CIS hegemony that isn't there (even though it most often is).
At any rate, if you have something material to contribute to how this became a thing, great, let's hear it; if not, please don't bother with this sidebar, your objection - groundless as it is - is noted, and I'm overruling it. I had no agenda in my inquiry, and wish not to derail onto this non-substantial tangent.
The title has always been spelled Se7en, for as long as I can remember
Yeah, me too. But then I saw the poster (see link in my original post up top), which is commonly referenced as the authoritative information for a movie as published/promoted by the production company.
Ok, I reviewed a video of the opening credits. Low and behold, it is written as "se7en", which provides a valid reason for people thinking that this, therefore, is how the title of the movie was supposed to be spelled.
I supposed I could have done my research before posting. But, at least, now I/we know.
That's so cool that Fincher calls it "seven" and says "se7en" was just them playing with the credits. The whole 90s fad of stylizing titles has become sort of an embarrassing cliché, sort of like 80s metal bands with umlauts over the letters. Sure the 1st band to do it was nifty but now it marks them as a joke. That's NOT to diminish the coolness of this movie either way. I just instinctively cringe whenever some cutesy gimmick becomes the mainstay. Signed, rööpr3ct

This trend of finding funky ways to write shit exists to this day and I don't think that will ever go away. Especially with online culture where they use leet speak to write out their handles something that only hard core computer nerds did back in the day.

That is a good thread! The poster near the top of it where it shows Pitt and Morgan's faces with the sins listed and crossed out, that's the poster I remember seeing at the theaters when it released. This is why I never remembered it being written as "Se7en" but I watched it recently and lo and behold that is how the spelled it in the opening credits. Goes without saying, excellent film.

Se7en is indeed the title of the film per the opening credits. Funny though, I am with you as not remembering it as such.

Fincher himself says it is Seven. https://twitter.com/FincherAnalyst/status/1217100294103937025
