Discuss Prey

The trailer hoo boy.....shouldn't judge a book by its' cover or a movie by its' trailer, but this does remind me an awful lot of Terminator Dark Fate where they basically tried to redo Terminator 2 and replace John Connor with "Juanita Conora" because that is apparently what the director and producers thought the fans wanted. Kind of the same thing here; apparently everyone wants to see Pocahontas battle the Predator.

Pocahontas was from the Powhatan/Algonquian people. She was not a Comanche!

The people in this movie are Comanche, not Algonquin or Cherokee.

Like @aholejones, not super stoked on the pervasive woke agenda in Hollywood (and just about everywhere else), but we'd be smart to reserve judgement until we've seen it. This looks like it could be good, and I "prey" they don't ruin it with a bunch of preachy crap.

And spare me this "nO wAy thAt TiNy GirL cAn wiN aGaiNSt pRedaTOr witH cLubS aNd aRroWs". After all the crazy stuff we've seen in the previous movies -- including a Predator getting killed by an always-out-of-breath 40-something police officer, and a super Predator getting killed by THE PIANIST -- I'm well-versed in suspension of disbelief, and you should be too!

Im pretty sure this movie is going to blow Shane Blacks crapfest out of the water..

I'm watching it now and maybe it will get better, although I'm starting to highly doubt it, as I'm through the first 30 minutes and it's basically been a repeating loop of how patriarchy is keeping her down even though she is obviously as good a hunter as the boys.

On a sidenote I didn't notice it from the trailer, but she looks quite a bit like Aubrey Plaza and now I keep expecting her to make sexual innuendos towards the predator instead of fighting it.

Also I'm not sure I quite follow the logic of her character arc where she goes from not being able to kill a rabbit to killing whole bunch of them in the span of about a minute because she tied a rope to her throwing axe. Seems legit.

edit: Yeah, this movie is a complete turd and it only gets worse as it progresses. That "if it bleeds we can kill it" line and the delivery of it were just about the most pathetic thing i've come across in recent movies.

Unlike @aholejones I thought the movie was fantastic. I didn't find it overly preachy, although it did *want *_to highlight a female Comanche trying to get in the "boys club" - which _would have been out of place at the time, and was treated fairly as such.

Predator taking on a bear was awesome - just pure awesome. Demonstrates how hard they are... frankly all of the scenes with the Predator demonstrated how bad-ass they are.

I'll agree that the "if it bleeds, we can kill it" line felt out of place. Frankly I'd have preferred if they spoke only native during the whole thing - but I guess it has to be mostly in English to placate the US audience.

Overall I thought it was pretty good. Yes, the "young woman wants to join the boys" aspect is tired at this point but thankfully didn't take up too much space, and also puts her in a position to observe how the Predator operates without him attacking her because she doesn't have a weapon.

Also not all the men are assholes so I didn't get an "all men are bad" vibe like I usually do in these kinds of modern day takes. They put in the work to show her being not as good in the beginning, then gradually learning the skills she will need to defeat the Predator in the end (though her trap with the mud and placing the face plate in juuuuust the right place was kind of dumb).

It's not a perfect movie but at least it seemed like they were just trying to make a good Predator movie and put in the work to present us with a new Predator with a different look that didn't clash with the first two movies and some cool alternate weapons given he didn't have the shoulder canon. I'd give the movie maybe a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. Not as good as Predator 2 but better than Predators, The Predator and AVP.
