In the movie I see APPLAUSE signs blinking with the scary chimp standing there. Normally that means the audience is suppose to applause. So was there a studio audience? They show empty seats. In the replay of the event later in the movie I think I heard a crowd of people yelling, but it's not clear to me if it was just the cast members (along with those behind the camera and production crew) or if there was in fact it was filled with a studio audience and everyone in the audience ran out screaming.
I can add that those blinking APPLAUSE signs in itself adds a feeling of eeriness. Many TV shows of popularity have been filmed (or taped) in front of a live audience, but if there was no audience, why were those signs blinking?

If you look carefully you'll notice a couple of audience members hiding among the seats. You have to focus to catch their fidgeting, still nervous not to draw the attention of the killer.

That means there must have been a full audience with most of them escaping!

They also said it in the film, the incident was not possible to hide because there was an audience during the filming.
