Discuss The Harder They Come

It really is. Probably the best, most recognizable "star" of it is the soundtrack that includes a few cuts by the lead actor, Jimmy Cliff. In the film, Cliff (as Ivanhoe) shoots some police officers and becomes a legend; in the film's song "You Can Get It If You Really Want" he depicts how, if you try to realize a dream, people will come at you sometimes in opposition. The song is very, very inspiring and lyrically, one of my favorites. I heard or read somewhere that back in the 80's (IIRC--I'll bet y'all are tired of me writing that, aren't you?), Cliff was all set to make it big internationally as a reggae star, but the industry only had room for one. That one was none other than the "Gong" Bob Marley, and Cliff got sidelined. Anyhoo, it's a goofy, fun film full of Jamaican patois that can be hard to grasp, and it's too bad that Ivanhoe (SPOILER) got capped at the end.

Thanks for sharing.

You are welcome. If I remember correctly I heard his music before Marley, it was the late 60s. I love reggae; Cliff, Marley, Peter Tosh, The Wailers, etc. (just to name a few).

Yup, I like all of those artists. I also dig Black Uhuru, LKJ, Lee Perry, Toots & the Maytals and many more... I had mint condition albums--or very close to mint--by all those guys. This cat who produced albums for Linton Kwesi named Dennis Bovell is like this super-producer who's gone on to do some producing for Thom Yorke's new band, The Smile.

I also dig ska, dub, dancehall, maybe even a little rocksteady....
