Is it just me or does the plot make very little sense. I mean they go through all this trouble to make up this super elaborate conspiracy to frame Wahlberg's character. However, after watching the movie, it leaves the viewer with one important question - why bother? They could've used any patsy they wanted since the plan was to shoot the fall guy anyway. Hell, if they wanted to use someone with supposed shooting experience they definitely could've used the crippled guy especially since he was so eager to take the blame and off himself for no clear understandable reason. Guy just decides to spill the beans and off himself for no reason. "Here let me tell you all of this conspiracy. You got all that? K. TNX. BYE." BLAM
While I'm here I also have to say that I'm pretty sure one of the first things forensics would've done is to assess whether or not the gun they recovered from the crime scene is functional or not. Besides they have means to tell whether or not it has just been fired. Kind of makes the "I switch the firing pins everytime I leave the house" thing pointless and silly.

I think they wanted him because he was the 'best' and was secluded so no one would really care if he died. They would just say he lost his mind. As for the cripple he was supposed to be dead, not to mention they could use a guy with his skills over and over again. I think he killed himself because he was tired and knew he would just keep getting used. Hell they used him as bait from what I remember. Cant be much of a life.
As for the forensics, they might not have checked if it functions since it was such a high level case. Or the guys that collected everything/lab guys are also in on the conspiracy. I think it was a pretty good idea. Not to mention if they even did put in a new firing pin it wouldnt match the serial numbers, if it had any, nor the barrel marks on the round.
