Discuss Asteroid City

Maybe it's a fatigue of making so much movies, maybe it's some kind of a developing apathy towards the cinema as a medium, maybe he is just tired and needs a break. But Wes Anderson is clearly losing it and his last two films The French Dispatch and Asteroid City are perfect examples how even greatest visionaries can sometimes fall on their face.

I mean, both movies are visually stunning. The framing, the choreography, the cinematography are amazing. But the decision to make them both as some kind of a stage play affects negatively the story and the characters. Anderson forces a distance, a coldness and complete disconnection towards his own movies. I understand his homage to the French new wave, that he is trying to experiment and be some sort of Godard, but I fail to understand where this is coming from and why is it any interesting. I can watch Godard or Truffaut on my own, I don't need to see their imitation by Anderson. The new wave was 60 years ago, there was time and place for it back then, today it looks odd and irrelevant.

This movie could've been much better without all the stages and breaking 4th wall and reminding every 10 minutes that it's all just a play, it's fake, it's not real. These are some beginner filmmaker tricks. He had a story, great cast, the movie could've been simpler and yet much richer. Just the story of the people that gathered in the Asteroid City and what they witness, could've been a really good movie that pleases and leaves a deep impact. Too bad Anderson decided to ruin it by pointing how fake this whole business is.

After very good The Grand Budapest Hotel Anderson seems to lose his way and keeps releasing insignificant and forgettable stuff. He is the one that needs to wake up.

Those full frontal scenes of Lea Seydoux are easily some of the most captivating images Anderson has ever captured
