New York, 1968: Paul, Lloyd und Jon stehen kurz vor ihrer Einberufung nach Vietnam. Da sie sowohl gegen den Krieg als auch Gegner von Präsident Johnson, versuchen sie die unangenehme Pflicht zu umgehen, was zwei von ihnen auch erfolgreich gelingt. Jon wird allerdings direkt in eine Elite-Einheit gesteckt. Währenddessen sammelt Paul Erfahrungen im Porno-Business und Lloyd möchte die Ermordung John F. Kennedys aufklären, wie besessen klammert er sich an die Recherche zu dem Thema. Somit sind die jungen Leute alle mit Dingen beschäftigt, die zum damaligen Zeitpunkt großen Unmut in der Bevölkerung hervorrufen. Wie auf einem Pulverfass sitzt jeder der drei und jegliche unüberlegte Handlung kann unangenehme Folgen für die rebellischen Gemüter haben.

폴, 존, 로이드는 베트남전에 참전하기 싫어서 징병 신체 검사에 떨어질 수 있는 방법들을 찾는다. 가장 어눌한 폴을 위해 로이드와 존은 호모 행세하는 법이나 정신과 의사한테 극우 위험인물로 분류돼서 면제되는 법을 제안하고 가르쳐 준다. 하지만 이도 저도 제대로 하지 못한 폴은 컴퓨터로 여자를 만나 데이트하면서 허송세월하고 로이드는 엉뚱하게도 케네디 대통령 암살 사건을 새롭게 조명하겠다고 떠들고 다닌다. 그리고 여자를 밝히는 존은 영화를 찍는 척하면서 여자들을 꼬신다.

Paul Shaw está intentando encontrar algún pretexto para que el ejército no lo envíe a Vietnam. Sus amigos John y Lloyd creen que lo mejor que puede hacer es alegar alguna enfermedad que no le permita superar las pruebas médicas.

À la télévision, le président Johnson justifie l'engagement américain au Viêt Nam. Paul et ses deux amis Jon et Lloyd, eux, passent des heures à chercher tous les moyens de se faire réformer. Chacun utilise finalement une méthode différente pour s'en sortir devant le recruteur : Jon essaie ainsi de se faire passer pour un patriote extrémiste et incontrôlable. Puis, en attendant les résultats de leurs prestations, chacun retourne à ses obsessions. Paul teste les rencontres amoureuses "par ordinateur", et se retrouve face à toutes sortes de déséquilibrées. Lloyd, lui, a une idée fixe : découvrir la vérité sur l'assassinat de Kennedy...

Johnson elnök Amerikájában vagyunk, aki hazafias viselkedést követel a hippi nemzedék minden férfitagjától: lennének ágyútöltelékek a pimaszul elhúzódó vietnámi háborúban. A három vagabundnak azonban esze ágában sincs beállni a hadseregbe, minden igyekezetükkel azon vannak, hogy "alkalmatlan" minősítéssel megússzák a besorozást, hiszen a város változatosabbnál változatosabb életlehetőségektől.

An offbeat, episodic film about three friends, Paul, a shy love-seeker, Lloyd, a vibrant conspiracy nut, and Jon, an aspiring filmmaker and peeping tom. The film satirizes free-love, the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam, and amateur film-making.

Il film racconta le vicende intrecciate di tre personaggi, racchiuse tra due apparizioni televisive del presidente Johnson occupato a esaltare la "grande società" americana. I tre sono: Jon Rubin, il cui hobby è di fotografare le ragazze che si spogliano davanti ad una finestra; Paul Shaw, che cerca in ogni modo, anche spacciandosi per omosessuale, di evitare l'arruolamento per il Vietnam e intanto si procura donnine ricorrendo ad un computer; e infine Lloyd Clay, che tenta di scoprire la verità sull'assassinio di John Kennedy, poiché non crede alla versione ufficiale della sua morte. Quando arriva troppo vicino alla verità, Lloyd viene a sua volta ucciso come i diciassette testimoni del delitto. Alla fine del film, Jon Rubin, militare in Vietnam, è intervistato da un giornalista della TV, che lo vuol presentare come valoroso patriota, anziché sparare su una vietcong, come il giornalista si aspetterebbe, la fa spogliare davanti alla televisione.

Saudações é uma sátira sobre um jovem realizador de filmes amadores, sobre amor livre, o assassinato de Kennedy e a Guerra do Vietnã. Típico filme de contra-cultura americana dos anos 60, marca a estréia do mestre Brian de Palma, que com esse longa ganhou o Urso de Prata no Festival de Berlim de 1969. Saudações também foi a estréia nos cinemas de Robert De Niro.
