I have seen this a couple of times and each time I come away with different thoughts/ideas. Being from the United Kingdom I can understand why there would be a lot of anti-immigrant sentiment. Especially from those who were very nationalistic. On the other hand the way Derek interacted with the gang members (described as Crips) was very brutal. Shooting them because they were trying to steal his truck is one thing but I felt the curbstomp was sickening. I did think that Derek's transformation after going to prison was an interesting idea. I didn't really care for the rape scene but the relationship started with the black prisoner was tantamount to the plot. Derek's disassociation with the Neo Nazi movement seemed almost inevitable. Trying to protect Danny from Cameron and Seth was the next logical move. In the end when "Little Henry" shot Danny in the school loo Derek's reaction showed he was in fact human. I felt that Edward Norton did a really brilliant job and the way he interacted with the other characters were brilliant as well. The speech he gave his mum's boyfriend was chilling. Showing the racist tats and telling him it meant he was not welcome. (He was the Jewish guy played by Elliott Gould).
