With some disappointing underacting (Waltz) and overacting (Foster, Reilly) going on around her, Kate Winslet was the acing grace of this little ensemble, giving a strong performance up until the whisky started to flow, whereupon she became one of the most unconvincing drunks in memory. Her arm-flailing and slurring did not ring true at all.
Overall this was a let-down - always watchable, occasionally funny, seldom perceptive. I’m sure it worked much better on stage and perhaps should have remained there. The brief running token helped it to go down easily, at least, but everybody involved has done much stronger work.
