Both odd sheep Bond films in a sense - one not an EON production, yet starring the classic Bond, the other sharing the same strange Miami Vice meets Bergerac production qualities, with the additional handicap of a less than stellar Bond.
But when it comes to actually watching these, which one is the worst? Which one gets turned off earliest when that inevitable time comes to give them another try?

But really I was just meaning out of these two - tried, and failed again, to watch all of Licence To Kill on the box the other night there and that got me thinking about these two in particular given the particular "cheap" feel they both seem to have...

Ha, good question - potentially interchangeable you could argue π but no, I think cheap - The Living Daylights was made a couple of years earlier on a slightly lesser budget and that doesn't stand out as particularly cheap looking despite being in the same era. Likewise if you compare Never Say Never Again with Octopussy - it actually had a much higher budget in the same year of release...

@The Midi-chlorian Count hello, haven't talked to you for awhile. As everyone on MDb knows (or they should) that I adore Quantum of Solace.
As for Never Say Never Again, we all know that it's a bad remake of Thunderball. But I think that License To Kill is a good movie. I predict that this Bond movie will eventually a cult movie.

Hello Maria - yes, I know you're a big fan of Mr Craig and Timothy's efforts. I think we're at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of Bond! Having said that, that's no bad thing, can't all like the same things...
As per my list above though, I actually rated The Living Daylights the highest of their efforts. I really tried to give Licence To Kill a fair go but I couldn't make it through. Sorry π

For my money, Never Say Never. Seeing Connery balding and puffy, romancing a far too young Kim Basinger was off-putting. License to Kill was just bland which how I felt about all the Dalton movies. (Their cinematography felt like it was lensed for television, not an 80' screen.)

@The Midi-chlorian Count That's quite alright. As you said, one of the nice things about Bond is that there's something for everyone. I remember when I saw the NSNA trailer in the theater. When the audience heard Sean Connery's voice, the whole theater went nuts!

@AlienFanatic: I have to agree with you about NSNA. It was a letdown. The only things I liked about it were the theme song, Bernie Casey as Felix Leiter, and the cameo by the then unknown to American audiences Rowan Atkinson.

Seriously, I love both films. Can't help myself, I adore this franchise BUT "Licence to Kill" is much better though. Kim Basinger was supersexy in NSNA too

@PhelpsFan I adore Licence to Kill - probably one of my favorite Bond films. It is entertaining, funny, action-packed. Both Bond girls were fantastic, not to mention beautiful. Timothy was impressive as agent 007. I wish he made more Bond films. Gladys Knight (R.I.P. sweety) did an amazing theme song too

@IrinaOma I didn't know that Gladys Knight died! When did this happen?
On to the movie. When it came out in 1989, I couldn't believe how violent it was. At the time it was considered the most violent Bond movie ever. After buying the DVD and watching it a few times, I began to realize in order to have the movie work, the violence had to in there. I loved Carey Lowell. Her Pam Bouvier was such a badass! And I loved watching her arguing with Bond.
Talisa Soto was very beautiful, but the character of Lupe irritated me. Of course her character would be considered to exhibiting symptoms of Battered Woman Syndrome now.
And last but not least, I loved that Desmond Llewellyn got so much screen time as Q. He was great! BTW, what is your favorite scene in the movie?

It seems Ms. Knight is carrying the torch for dear Abe Vigoda. He was the celebrity most often thought of as deceased long before he finally died. No, Ms. Knight is still alive today. Perhaps Irina was thinking of Donna Summer? Many of the female greats of the '60's and '70's like Tina Turner, Gladys, and Aretha Franklin are still kicking around, thankfully.

Yeah, whilst I find the film to be terrible, I do love Gladys Knight and think that it's the last great symphonic Bond theme (Goldeneye sadly fell a bit flat as far as Tina's effort went).
One thing that does make me laugh about it though is that I always remember a radio dj at the time it was released saying he thought she was singing "Once I get my tights on you"! I Still sing it as that to this day when I hear it π
