I would have liked to include Taste of Cherry but it didn't get a 'wide release' in the US until 1998. Same for Children of Heaven, but it wasn't released until 1999 in the US, Princess Mononoke wasn't released widely until 1999 (but since it's my least favorite Miyazaki film I'll let it slide) And yes I know the US isn't the center of the universe but...
