It's got great characters and a lot of humanity and humour along with the hard hitting truths about America's troubled and troubling history. Reckon it could have benefited from a few trims though.

"i dare to say that this was trimmed down to perfection."
Firstly, thanks for replying, Abra' - my first conversation on this site - RIP IMDb boards.
Now, the whole 'Django back in chains' bit - that felt necessary to you? To me, that added nothing.

Not me. This was one of his worst. 6/10. Nothing beats his first 3: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown. His best more recent was Kill Bill Vol. I.

Hi http'. Thanks for jumping in. Really happy to have a place to discuss film after the demise of IMDb boards. Briefly, thought KB1 was pretty weak but really liked KBII - gave more room for character (above style) as far as I'm concerned. Need to rewatch Jackie B, but wasn't overly impressed 1st time. RD and PF are 'must see' films too me but not so much 'must rewatch'. Your 6/10 for DU is a genuine enigma to me.

I loved it. But i have a problem with the "No dogs and Mexicans allowed" sign. Clearly in the flashback it showed everyone was allowed.

I wouldn't rewatch Django Unchained if you paid me a hundred bucks. This to me is the epitome of a movie with no rewatch value whatsoever.
While RD and PF aren't necessarily on the top of my rewatch movies either, especially PF is very rewatchable due to great scenes, classic scenes.
JB is a more quiet, low key movie for QT, but it's fairly original and has a clever kind of style to it.
Funny you like Vol II more than I for KB. I've seen some who do, and reviews were almost the same, but I fell asleep during II and was very disappointed with the direction it went after I. Vol. I I thought was pretty awesome. Both I saw in theatres.

Agreed. Watch Django once. and that will be the only time I watch it. Now Inglorious Basterds? I can watch that over and over and over. Definitely my fave Tarantino film

Clearly one of his worst movies... I think Tarantino's revenge movies are highly overrated... they seem like simple wish fulfilment without much else to them apart from his usual referencing of other film...

'Clearly'?
People want diferent things from films and have different criteria for assessing their value.
I do see where you're coming from with the revenge films and wish fulfilment but in my opinion there's a richness and depth to Django that The Kill Bill films, Death Proof, and Inglorious Basterds lacked. In fact I find the characters in Django more interesting and the story more compelling than with any of Tarantino's other films to date.
It's also a bold and very risky subject to take on and I think Tarantino deserves respect for mixing that historical horror and ugliness up with entertainment, allowing many who wouldn't otherwise ever think about or even know about it to contemplate and discuss it. Don't get me wrong, entertainment comes first and last - people don't go to the movies to be educated or preached to - but that's stuff people need to be aware of.
In the end though, I think it just comes down to how much you enjoy or identify with the characters. Tarantino is a proven master of creating characters and it's pretty much a smorgasbord - you dig in and dig what you dig. To try to approach his films objectively and determine which of them is the best would likely achieve very little.

I would agree that "clearly" is a somewhat biased point of view, as if it's a generally accepted truth that these movies are "inferior" to the others. It's really just a matter of taste. While my taste runs alongside yours, I think, I would say that there is an audience that enjoys some of QT's indulgences in these films. I too found this movie and Inglorious Basterds unlikable. I felt that the extremes that QT went to for the endings distracted from otherwise excellent movies.
I'd just be careful about minimizing the opinions of others when it comes to film tastes. Movies are extremely personal and even if a picture is a critical and financial bomb, you can bet that there are at least a handful of people that genuinely enjoyed it. And their opinion is just as valid as the millions who loved, for instance, The Godfather.

Don't say that to Spike Lee! He went on record as saying that the mixture of slavery subject matter and exploitation disrespects his ancestors, and that he wouldn't see the film.

Clearly, not everyone agrees with me, but that's what discussion boards are for ;)
