Discuss Bigbug

I'm a huge fan of Jeunet's early works up to Amélie. His 2 after that were ok, then I lost track. This one totally flew under and I just heard about it. I dunno, the trailer and the few clips on youtube didn't give me much confidence. And it doesn't help that it gets a severe thrashing on rottentomatoes (only +44% from critics). The consensus seems that it's full of Jeunet's quirky style but no real substance.

I don't have streaming, so my only way to watch it is buying an import blu-ray from China for about $12 bucks. Not a bank breaker, but I figured I'd ask opinions before wasting a lunch...

Hi...

I am also a fan of Jeunet's early work. BigBug is a lighthearted comedy that is, stylistically at least, completely different from anything I have seen before. The premise follows a well-trodden path in cinema, and that's no bad thing; the characters are amusing and likeable, and the performances from the cast are very good (only a brief cameo from Jeunet regular Dominique Pinon, sadly), the focus of the film being on the humans' relationship with their robots (see domestic androids, robotic assistants, overlords, the AI, etc.). Moreover, it is a light, screwball comedy, set in a possible future where we have unconsciously surrendered our lives to the machines forgetting that they are not as smart as we give them credit for. It was easy to watch, and we enjoyed it a lot and would rate it 7.5/10. It is pure entertainment, and while not as whimsy as Amelie, surreal as The City of Lost Children, or as dark as Delicatessen, it does have a lot to offer provided you don't take it (or yourself) too seriously. I am also tempted by those Chinese Blu-Ray's, if only to add it to my collection. Hope this helps!

Thanks, it helps a bunch! I think I’ll grab a copy if the price comes down to $10 or less. I’ve recently gained a renewed appreciation for Jeunet’s humor, after watching Jacques Tati’s films and learning how they influenced Jeunet. This sounds like fun stuff.
