I just grabbed this movie on BD here in China, and I am planning on showing it to some of my Chinese friends for a laugh. I honestly thought the story here was pretty good, managing to be funny, without removing the creepy elements that gave it a background intensity and threat, which kept is feeling scared for the safety of our protagonists, without becoming too absurd.

Yes, this movie is great. Being someone who is mildly creeped out by spiders, all of the jump scares really sucked me in to the movie.
My favorite part is when the guy enters the barn, plucks a strand of the web and the spider domes jumping out of the dark.

I remember seeing it in the theaters and enjoying it. But as I watched it years later, I felt the movie fell apart once it came down to Jeff Daniels' character against the monster spider. It was far more interesting when they were being terrorized by the smaller, but equally deadly, offspring. John Goodman, though, was reliably good and I miss Julian Sands' presence in modern films.

It's an old favourite. I'll watch it every couple of years or so and enjoy it every time.
Great soundtrack too - very frequently during an 'encounter' with a spider, especially one of those big bastards around September, that ominous theme goes through my mind

I'm curious, why exactly did you feel that way?
