Discuter de Don't Look Up : Déni cosmique

People seem to be very disappointed with this movie, I mean it's Netflix, what did you expect, immediately when I saw Netflix logo in the beginnig my expectations dropped (didn't really have any to start with knowing nothing about the plot).

I found it amusing and enjoyable, could be maybe a bit shorter, but I liked they were not afraid to go with ending they used (personally I would go with partial success at comet destruction, still catastrophic event but not extinction). It was for sure better and more enjoyable than new meta self absorbed Matrix. Gave it 7/10, Matrix 6.

People keep comparing it with Idiocracy, but I don't really see it, I find it much closer to Wag The Dog vibes of selfish careless manipulating politicians instead crazy dumb society. After all I didn't understand how they moved from people not caring about comet because it will bring new jobs as advertised in official campaign to suddenly meeting where people just look at the sky and realize comet is real, that seemed really dumb, when very same politicians were advertising comet is real and will bring jobs and only minority of people didn't believe in comet at all.

And please don't compare this movie with COVID theatre, where COVID is comet, because you got it reversed, you are being manipulated by politicians/MSM who try to sell this virus as something close to ebola, while it has survival rate 99.8%, so the dumb ones are people falling for the white house narrative (same as in the movie) supporting meaningless restrictions, while people who read studies and statistics can see this is non-problem unless you are fat, sick/old, but yes there is overlapping small group of deniers with the movie.

Director/Writer McKay has gone on record stating that this movie is a direct metaphor to the looming CATASTROPHE of Climate Change! Watching after listening to his interview, I found nothing funny about this piece of propaganda. It started with some promise (ooh is this going to be like DEEP IMPACT but even more realistic?) but swiftly loses all credibility once it turns everyone outside of Jennifer Lawrence into annoying cartoon characters and focuses heavily on irritating comedic diversions (the frequent call-backs to the "I cant believe he made us pay for the snacks" "joke").

I don't think it'll make anyone switch sides to trust the alarmists on the Climate Change debate. The film makes anyone skeptical of "the science" look like they're either inept or corrupt. I'm a big environmentalist but see right through all the Greta nonsense and hyperbole, and wonder why nobody ever talks about the obvious solution of Nuclear Energy and the obvious problem of China causing most of the world's pollution. It's not something that can be fixed just by throwing more tax dollars at it and restricting carbon use (let alone virtue-signaling on Twitter). This movie makes it look like a big problem like this has an obvious solution and that once big tech / private sector gets involved that it's best to enter a defeatist torpor to wait for the end.

The dig on Elon Musk with the autistic billionaire was the least subtle thing I've ever seen. Of course this film is a satire, but it's done with no art or tact to the point of just being a smear-piece. It lacks what THE BIG SHORT had, which was the strength to educate as well as indict and ridicule on an even keel. I think McKay has become like Pablo Picasso or David Lynch already; lazy due to his earlier successes. Now, anything I make must be good "because I made it".

If anyone is curious what a 70+ year old Meryl Streep looks like in the buff, I guess this is your movie. With Netflix included on my cell phone plan, at least the price was right.

I heard something about climate, but it's really up to you how you will interpret the movie, the movie is about comet hitting planet, everything else is open for interpretation, if he wanted to do movie about climate then he should have done movie about climate, though most of the people would not bother to watch it in first place so now he came with some BS about climate.

The dig on Elon Musk with the autistic billionaire was the least subtle thing I've ever seen.

Nah there was very little Musk in that character besides superficially he was autistic, it was a combo of Gates/Jobs/Bezos/Zuck

The covid/climate parallels were clear but it was also clear that politicians and billionaires are the anti-solution. If you pull a heavily partisan interpretation from this movie for either wing, it is a reflection of yourself. If anything it was anarchic.

I watched and really enjoyed this.

I had read before though re the suggested climate change metaphor but had to take that with a pinch of salt. Although it's pretty funny to consider the movie in that context, given the rest of the world seems to do nothing bar a particularly last minute attempt which you just know will clearly fail. So either you just laugh at that as lampooning countless disaster movies where it's down to America alone to save the day or you scratch your head at the narrative that suggests America alone can stop climate change 🤔.

Anyway watching as a satire on the politicising of covid was pretty funny. There was a particularly good scene where Leo breaks down and starts screaming at the watching public about it not mattering what side your politics are on, that it is very real and it's heading this way...

I think I'll probably watch this again at some point which may well be the first time I've done so with a Netflix film!
