محادثة The Last Voyage of the Demeter

"We call him dracula"

"Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London."

"Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew."

Well now that's a creative offshoot of the old Dracula story.

But the minute I saw a cute dog in the trailer I groaned. They wouldn't stoop to the most predictable horror cliché in the book, would they? Went to DoesTheDogDie to check my suspicions and, well yeah... groan.

I just got back from seeing this movie. It was okay. A 5 or 6 out of 10 from me. I must say, that the fad of the last couple of decades-- of using darkness (such that the audience can't see much of anything), jump scares, and fast camera-shots --in the Horror genre, is starting to wear on me. I much prefer the more gradual pacing of the 1922 classic by F.W. Murnau over this effort. But I would like to hear what true fans of the Horror genre have to say about this latest Dracula effort; I'll be first to admit that Horror is not my favorite film genre, and so perhaps I am not the best to judge. I felt very little genuine fright while watching this movie.

Some random trivia:

Those who are dedicated mariners (whether civilian or military) in real life, might have a real problem with the movie's title: a more proper title for this movie would be "The Last Voyage of Demeter". The rules of naval nomenclature dictate that one never places the word "The" in front of a ship's name, whether writing or speaking about the ship in question (I have made this mistake myself).

Oh, and rooprect-- the death of the dog is quick, and mostly off-screen. For reference, if you've ever seen the 1981 Mad Max II/The Road Warrior, the death of Max's blue heeler (mistakenly thought by many to be a dingo) was much more emotional, at least for me (even though it, too, died offscreen).

I really liked this movie.

I rate it 7/10.

From what I've read, this movie is bombing in its first weekend-- which doesn't mean that you are wrong. I did think it odd that this movie was released in August; this should really be an October - March (cold weather and somber) release. I feel that it could have done much better with a later release date. This is not a summer movie.

I agree. It has a good trailer but launching this horror movie during Summer makes no sense.

It should have been closer to Halloween or even later.

I saw it last weekend. I thought it was ok though It did a pretty good job mirroring the logs in Chapter 7 of the book except for a couple of things. Anna isn't ever mentioned in the logs, but I can sort of forgive that as it would be understandable that the Captain wouldn't want to include her in the logs in case she died and/or they had to throw her overboard. The other being that the vampires were burned by sunlight, which isn't in the book, but something added into the lore by the movie Noseratu. The vampires in the book are never affected by sunlight in that way.

I've not read the book and don't intend to, but I agree with everyone. Looks good, nice setting tand decent acting, but something was missing. It wasn't scary, I don't know.

What were they affected by?

Decapitation. Dracula himself died by getting his head sawn off with a bowie knife.
