Discuss The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy's singing 'Over the rainbow' does not make the film immediately unrealistic as she could just be imaging she is singing to music and the music is thus just for our benefit. They almost filmed the farm scenes at a real farmhouse but a technical problem arose so they switched to inside a studio. It looks surprisingly believable in sepia that they are outside. You cannot easily tell that they are not. My question is: how realistic is the tornado? (Exclude Dorothy's entire dream part of it!)

I've always been impressed by the tornado special effects; the approaching, then striking, tornado came out looking remarkably credible.

By the way, for the first time ever, when I most recently watched this movie (for probably the gazillionith time) a year or two ago, I noticed something that I never had before: The painted backdrop behind the scene when Dorothy first meets Scarecrow when he's hanging on a pole in the field. I don't remember, now, specifically what I noticed about the background (I'm referring to the part thereof that depicts "sky" and general beyond-cornstalks scenery), but I readily noticed that it was all painted. Funny how all at once you can for the first time ever notice something like that, after having viewed a film many, many prior times throughout the years.
