Why Possess Dana and Tully Though?

What exactly was the point of the demon dogs possessing Dana and Tully? I've seen the movie numerous times over the years, one of the best movies of the 80's as far as I'm concerned. But I'm not sure why this possession takes place, the demon dogs possess the both of them, they really don't need to take a human form since they do nothing, and then during the final scene they turn back into dogs.
It gives the two actors some fun things to do, but in terms of the story itself what was the purpose?

Zuul needed the Keymaster (Louis) and Gatekeeper (Dana) to get together for some aggressive cuddling in human form to return to Earth. After serving this purpose, they were turned into the servant dogs. It's a strange ritual, but that's Aykroyd's mind.

Gonna ask a dumb question here, because when you watch this movie in theaters for the first time as a 9 year old, you don't really THINK about it...did Loius and Dana have sex? Sounds like they did!...cause DAMN, never gave it much thought, but now it makes perfect sense..especially the way Dana (as the Gatekeeper) was acting super sexy the whole time!

It does fly over your head as a kid. I took advantage of a 1920s slang dictionary for "aggressive cuddling." Dana was one hotsy-totsy sheba in her glad rags.
