Going far beyond the standard imagery of Rasta—ganja, reggae, and dreadlocks—this cultural history offers an uncensored vision of a movement with complex roots and the exceptional journey of a man who taught an enslaved people how to be proud and impose their culture on the world. In the 1920s Leonard Percival Howell and the First Rastas had a revelation concerning the divinity of Haile Selassie, king of Ethiopia, that established the vision for the most popular mystical movement of the 20th century, Rastafarianism. Although jailed, ridiculed, and treated as insane, Howell, also known as the Gong, established a Rasta community of 4,500 members, the first agro-industrial enterprise devoted to producing marijuana. In the late 1950s the community was dispersed, disseminating Rasta teachings throughout the ghettos of the island. A young singer named Bob Marley adopted Howell's message, and through Marley's visions, reggae made its explosion in the music world.

Au début du siècle dernier, le tout jeune Leonard Percival Howell (1898-1981) quitte la Jamaïque, se fait marin et parcourt le monde. Sur sa route, il croise toutes les idées qui agitent l’époque. Du bolchevisme à la new thought, de Gandhi à l’anarchisme, du garveyisme à la psychanalyse, il s’agit de trouver sa terre promise. C’est avec le cocktail de ces idées que Leonard "Gong" Howell revient en Jamaïque pour fonder en 1939 la première Commune rasta, le Pinnacle. De là va s’élaborer le mode de vie et de pensée qui nourrira la culture du reggae que Bob Marley répandra à travers le monde. Trente ans après la mort du chanteur, il est grand temps de rendre hommage à Leonard Percival Howell Le Premier Rasta, dont le discours révolutionnaire, politique et social résonne avec les mouvements altermondialistes d’aujourd’hui.

Leonard "The Gong" Howell (1898 – 1981) gilt als einer der ersten Rastafari. Anhand seines Lebens zeichnet Hélène Lee die Entstehung der Bewegung vor dem Hintergrund von Kolonialismus und Unterdrückung nach. 1915 verlässt Howell Jamaika, weil er mit der kolonialen Justiz in Konflikt gerät und in Panama, wo er als Seemann anheuert. Seine Reisen bringen ihn in Kontakt mit dem Kommunismus, dessen Prinzipien von "Friede, Land und Brot" ihn faszinieren – eine Reise ins Mutterland des Kommunismus aber ernüchtert ihn. In New York kommt er mit Juden, Anhängern Gandhis, aber auch mit Marcus Garvey, der als Prophet der Rastafarians gilt, in Berührung. Er hat erheblichen Einfluss auf Howell, der Garveys Pan African Movement beitritt, das eine Auswanderung in ein geeintes schwarzes Afrika propagiert, das von dem gerade gekrönten Kaiser Äthiopiens Haile Selassie angeführt werden soll. Dessen Geburtsname Ras Tafari wird zur Bezeichnung der neu entstehenden Bewegung.
