Didn't expect Spielberg to be so good at making a spy thriller.
A lot more adult and visceral then I expected. Yet, strong and nuanced in the drama and philosophical themes... I think he should do more in the genre, or other types of thriller... more grown up movies that are entertaining

These were exactly my thoughts after watching this film. It is a pitty that Spielberg insists on making family friendly movies and he doesn't try to make more films for ( as you say it ) grown up- I would say adult audiences.

Spielberg is prolific, no doubt. And range is a big part of what makes Billy Wilder my favourite movie-maker of all time.
Spielberg has demonstrated he can be quite serious as well as just have fun - I don't have to list his works here. He's pro's pro movie-maker, among the all-time greats.

This is the closest we've seen Spielberg trying to deal with adult themes, with relationships between men and women that involve sexuality (the scenes with this wive) and sex as persuasion (the spy) and such... Basically exploring the carnal, even if it's for the briefest of moments...
He's so good at the movie-making aspects and know how to tell as story visually, unlike most other directors today... I wish he starts exploring the more sensual aspects of human relationships and such in his film... It would be great to see him tackle more of these types of movies targeted to an adult audience, with actual adult human beings portrayed on screen...

Have you seen Jaws? Close Encounters?

Yup... Seen both... I liked Jaws, but I'm not a big fan of Close Encounters and actually think it's a film that suffers from Spielberg's aversion to dealing with adult themes...
It seems he didn't want to deal with the worldly aspects of the relationships between the adults and rather focused on the spectacle and promise of the alien encounter... Something seemed missing

Thats true, but Catch Me was more adolecent than adult, which is less of a stretch for Spielberg... One of my favourite movie

"Lincoln" is quite good. Not the biggest Spielberg fan but when he does what he's good at he's quite good.

Hey, I've only seen one of those three, and I didn't like it.; regardless, they are mature movies.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Spielberg fan, but it's difficult to just give a pass to an assertion that he has an aversion to dealing with adult themes, unless I don't know what you mean by "dealing" and "adult".
It's easy for me to support that he may not deal well with them, insofar as I understand your definitions, which I may not...
