I'm not sure how much of this is truth but there are also snippets of interviews with Drew Barrymore where she refers to this planned much darker sequel.
This is one of those odd ones where that made mega bucks at the B.O.(would be #4 ALL TIME adjusted for inflation! Sourcd boxofficemojo), but never got a sequel. I think Spielberg, as a filmmaker, knew he wouldn't be able to capture lightning in a bottle twice. Plus would anyone really go see a sequel today?

I stand corrected...not an OFFICIAL theatrical sequel, but as close as we're gonna get! This came out 2 Christmases ago!
