Discuss E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

This is the only movie that gave me recurring nightmares when I was a child, from when I first saw it at the age of 5 or so, until I was about 10. I spent so many sleepless nights because of this movie and I still feel a bit uncomfortable when I see a picture of E.T.

I think I was so scared of it because there was a culture of fear around it in my kindergarten. We would hear the older kids boast about how they had watched E.T. without fear, so watching it was almost considered like a rite of passage that we all had to go through at one point. Movies were shown in a separate room, so we could choose to watch it or do something else. When any other movie was on, almost all the kids would watch... but E.T. would split the group between the fearless and the cowards :)

To this day, I think I'd rather encounter the xenomorph from Alien in real life than the evil version of E.T. that used to haunt my nightmares.

A friend and I were watching TV back in the days, when we heard a black comedian make a reference to "E.T., the extra testicle." We were in stitches.

I loved E.T., but I wasn't quite as young as you. What is funny is that while in the beginning the way E.T. was revealed was kinda scary in a creepy way, once we "get to know him" it's not so scary (the little girl obviously serves in this way). BUT I would still find him a little gross because he always seemed kinda slimy. lol Great film. BTW, we never got to watch it in school...good for you!

One more thing: if anything scared me about this film it was the power of government interference. lol And hence the roots of my libertarian stance were born! grin

To be fair, the idea was for E.T. not to look cute, to make it initially ambiguous as to whether he was good or evil- aand I do remember before I'd even seen the film, and I'd just seen him on some BT adverts, and I was like, "Who's that," and my mum saying "E.T.", and I was like "I don't like him," and my mum was like, "Why?", and I said "Because he's an alien." She replied, "Yeah, but he's a nice alien." This gave me some thought, and then when I watched the film a few months later (in both cases, I was 6) I really loved it, and do so to this day grinning <3
