La più diffusa e terrificante epidemia di tutti i tempi fu una tragedia che colpì l´Europa tra il 1347 ed il 1350, causando sconvolgimenti che cambiarono radicalmente l´esistenza dei sopravvissuti. La peste provocò profondi cambiamenti nella società di tutta l'Europa. Gli uomini, incontrandosi, provavano paura e diffidenza. Il terrore di contrarre il morbo toccò anche sacerdoti e religiosi.
