Considering this is a made-for-tv miniseries from 30 years ago, I think it's pretty effective. Enough to get my blood boiling at least. This is an adaptation of the Dominick Dunne novel published in '93. It's about the infamous Kennedy coverup of the rape/murder of a 15 year old girl that happened in the mid 70s. In this movie the murder happens in the mid 80s and the family isn't named as Kennedy, they're called the "Burns". But it's painfully obvious whom this is about, and in general we can apply it to any of the big moneyed American aristocracy with its fingers deep in the political machine.

Back to the miniseries, it portrays a fictitious court trial that happens 13 years after the murder when a new witness (the protagonist excellently played by Patrick Dempsey) decides to come forward. In real life the case did indeed come to trial but not until 2002, 27 years after the murder, 6 years after this mini. I won't spoil the ending of the mini, but in real life the murderer was convicted and sentenced to 20 years.

He served 11 years, then in 2013 he got out because the trial was declared invalid due to lack of competent representation, in other words on a slick technicality. It went to a higher court where he was found guilty again and sent back to prison in 2016. Two years later it was declared that the re-trial was invalid and would be re-re-tried, so he was freed once again pending that. But that never happened. In 2020 the case was completely thrown out.

Wow. I mean WOW. The whole point of the mini was to show how rich & powerful people rise above the law, presumably warning us of the dangers of trusting billionaire politicians with nasty skeletons in their closet.

50 years after the Moxley murder, not only are we still getting a parade of criminal politicians evading justice, but we're knowingly voting them into office.
