Debat Nomadland

Item: Nomadland

Language: en-US

Type of Problem: Incorrect_content

Extra Details: The genre category for 'Nomadland' should include 'Western'. The film is by all accounts a contemporary Western, as it fulfills the AFI's definition of a Western - being set in the American West and embodying the spirit of the frontier life. This frontier life can be seen through the new wave of van-dwelling nomads, who a character in the film even refers to as being similar to the pioneers. Multiple film publications have referred to the film as a contemporary Western, and it is recognized as such on Wikipedia.

Thanks for your report! slight_smile

Okay, you've convinced me. I just added "Western" again. cowboy

it is above all a social drama, with a western atmosphere of course, but also a cliché of all those whom society no longer wants.. and without pandemic please😷🙄😏

OK, so I changed this before seeing this report, but I still think Western is incorrect as a main genre. One could possibly see it as a subgenre since the movie is taking place "in the Western part of the United States". But it's not mentioned as a Western on Wikipedia and if you compare it to a regular Western, I'd say it has very little in common with previous movies.

But how is the Western genre really defined? Here's one definition (found via Google):

a film based on stories about life in the west of the US in the past

And another one:

a film, television drama, or novel about cowboys in western North America, set especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Even the AFI is referring to the past (when it mentions the "new frontier"):

a genre of films set in the American West that embodies the spirit, the struggle, and the demise of the new frontier.

If I could specify the exact subgenre of Nomadland I would use 'social drama', or perhaps even see it as a bit of an Adventure movie (she has a choice of a safe life, but goes on an adventure instead). And that is why I removed the Western genre today.

In any case, it is a beautiful film, poignant and representative of the American dream of today, whatever the different translations of the different dictionaries. Like what a single word can lead to long sentences! 🤠 Good continuation to you .. You do not have an easy job! 😉 (and sorry for my faulty translation, is google translate!)🙄
