I love the original Jaws and this is imo easily as good in many ways. The shark attacks/after effects are very imaginative; helicopter, water-skier, burned body... It keeps a very similar 70s summer vibe to the original too. But I think what tops the first film for me is some of the subtleties - the shark just visible in the harbour near the start, the teenagers in peril was, for me more tense than 3 men who largely put themselves in danger and had the tools and means to fend for themselves. The feeling for Brody knowing his son was going through - to a degree- what he had gone through... Like I said, I love the original, but Jaws 2 is probably my favourite by a small margin of the 2 - and therefore obviously, of the series.
