Discusión Jaws

I'm likely a minority on this. My favorite scene is when Chief Brody shoots the shark 6 times with his service weapon. IMHO, this is a turning point for Brody's character. He's already told Quint they need a bigger boat. But, at this point, he's just emptied a .38 revolver into this shark and it didn't even flinch. He realizes he is dealing with an Honest To God monster.

One of the many I love...

2 min 40 second continuous take with 3 superb actors.

Anyone who disagrees will be hung up by their buster browns!

Wonderful acting. Great scene. I can't help but wonder how much better Jaws 2 would have been if RD had agreed to play Matt Hooper again. But he wanted no part of it.

I read somewhere that Roy Scheider didn't want to do the sequel either, but was contractually obliged to do so.

One of my favourite scenes is about 72 minutes into the film, and we have the camera panning through the jaws of a shark hanging over a windows in Quint's hut; and through those jaws we see the Orca setting sail out of the harbour to begin the hunt for the shark!

What I liked about that set-up was the the idea of having the boat "swallowed up" by the jaws of the shark - an ominous warning beautifully framed.

I'm ashamed to say I never caught that before, Zola. Gonna have to watch it again.

It's quite subtle and understated, but I have always loved that scene :)

After Jaws, Roy Scheider signed a 3 picture deal with Universal.

The first film was Sorcerer, the 2nd film was to be The Deer Hunter but after rewrites he dropped out.

Universal said that if he did Jaws 2 (a film he had so far refused to do) they would count it as 2 films and his 3 picture deal would be fulfilled.

He reluctantly agreed.

Have you ever seen RS in "All That Jazz?" It's a strange film. Has sort of an "Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge" feel to it.

I'm partial to the scene where Brody gets mayor Vaughn to sign the req to hunt the shark. It's a perfect lead in to the second half if the film.

Hard to nail down a "favorite" though. There are a lot of great scenes!

I love scenes like I described. Shooting the starring "monster" repeatedly to no avail.

When they're comparing battle scars.
