Discuss The Princess of Montpensier

Very underrated film - I was completely won over by this thrilling and quite gorgeously produced French period drama. Intrigue, swordplay, bodice ripping, fabulous locations and a sexy, charismatic cast. Very highly recommended and a film I look forward to seeing again.

Rudely, sorry to go off-topic but I was wondering if you were going to finish up on the 30's lists (30, 31, 32, 33, & 34)?

As for the original question I'll have to hunt it down.

Yes, apologies for the delay! To be honest, I've been stalling because I realised looking at my lists that I have only seen twelve films from 1934 - but I shall go ahead and post and hope I can replace the weaker end of the list sometime soon.

Don't apologize, I understand it can be hard for you 'young folks' to have seen a lot of the older films. wink

I checked my local library to see if they had the film and they do not. They have a pretty extensive foreign film collection so I was surprised they didn't have it. I think I will request that they acquire it.

Haha I'm not THAT young anymore... I'm not sure why 1934 is such a blind spot. I have seen probably three times as many movies from 1932, 1933, 1935... so recommendations for 1934 would be particularly valuable!

I hope you manage to track this film down!

Here are a few of my favorites:

The Thin Man

Evelyn Prentice

Manhattan Melodrama

Fashions of 1934

Of Human Bondage

Anne of Green Gables

Imitation of Life

Tarzan and His Mate

I'm sure that there are many more that you would like that aren't my fav film genre (war,etc.). I also removed the Shirley Temple films which I don't think are your cup of tea? I love the comedies of the 30's so I could have added more.

I requested it & they approved it. They only order things once a month, so they should have a copy of it in March. I will be sure to tell you my impression of it.

Just finished watching this film. I'm not as impressed with it as you are but it's not bad. Beautifully filmed, I agree about the cast (except for Philippe, what a whiner). The locations were beautiful. The battle scenes about 40 minutes in were awful. As a rule I love historical dramas (not a fan when they play fast & loose with the facts though) but this one didn't really grab me. I give it a 5.5/10.

Ah, well, I'm glad you gave it a whirl anyway. Like every film, it's not for everyone! I didn't mind the battle scenes at all although I do agree that Philippe's whinging was grating!

Am watching again as one of the stars died yesterday (19 January 2022) — Gaspard Ulliel. Rented this years ago and now must refresh my memory about the French civil wars. This film is streaming on AMC+.

(my first post on your site, hope it's all right)

Welcome to the site. ✨ Your post is fine. So sad about Ulliel though, he was so young & had just started a new project (Moon Knight).

Sounds very appealing, and also the sort of production that wouldn't come anywhere near being green lit today, on account of all those "problematic" elements you mentioned. Although word has it that the producers are contemplating making a sequel, and even rang up Gaspard Ulliel yesterday, to see if he was down for reprising his role. So far as anyone has heard, dude hasn't picked up the phone yet

Nope. If you don't want to see that kind of wording, turn on your 'bad language' filter.
