Discuss Mission: Impossible 8

... Excerpt from Mission: Impossible 8's Title Change Shows Just How Bad Tom Cruise's $567.5M Disappointment Was:

The news that Mission: Impossible 8 will reportedly change its title shows just how much the box office underperformance of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One affected the series. For a while there, the Mission: Impossible movies were on track to pull off a seemingly impossible box office achievement. While even successful franchises typically grow less profitable with each new sequel or, at best, maintain their success across various installments, the Mission Impossible movies made more money with each new outing for over a decade. This trend seemed set to continue judging by the outsized success of Top Gun: Maverick, which starred the franchise’s leading man, Tom Cruise.

While Mission: Impossible 8 was originally set to be titled Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part Two, the sequel is now reportedly set to change its name. This seems strange since the movie is clearly a direction continuation of Dead Reckoning Part One’s plot. Dead Reckoning Part One ended on a big cliffhanger and was literally titled “Part One,” so it will be jarring and strange if the franchise does not follow that up. However, despite Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’s positive reviews, the sequel’s title change likely means that the filmmakers feel they need to change up the franchise’s formula.

... Excerpt from Fans Mock Potential Mission: Impossible 8 Title Change:

Several movie enthusiasts took to X (formerly Twitter) to bash the idea of Dead Reckoning Part Two reportedly changing its name. Given the last sequel was titled Dead Reckoning Part One and the seventh and eighth films in the franchise are connected, fans are wondering why the Dead Reckoning Part Two title would change, believing the idea lacks logic. One X user proclaimed "it's a little too late for that" when responding to a post about the possible new title while another branded the idea the "single funniest franchise course correction ever" if it comes to fruition.

This is kinda hilarious. Normally it's the opposite: producers will change a film's name to reverse-engineer it as a sequel even though it has nothing to do with its predecessor (The Prophecy 4, Normal Adolescent Behavior 2, The Exorcist 3). This one is pretty embarrassing, to proudly announce "Part One" and then throw it under the bus. Was it that much of a disaster? I mean, couldn't they just pretend it did ok for the sake of titular closure?? 😆
