There’s a scene in the movie that puzzles me. It’s the one where Mavis is dropping Buddy off at home after driving him back from the Nipple Confusion show. She initiates the kiss, but he doesn’t seem to pull back or resist at all. But as we see throughout the movie, he’s clearly happy with his wife and daughter and not interested in Mavis romantically at all - he’s just being nice to her because he feels sorry for her and is trying to be a good friend.
So what happened in this scene? Was Buddy just drunk and caught off guard? He’s polite to a fault, so was he just too polite to push her away? It’s a weird moment.

This scene surprised me also, especially when we see the next day Buddy seems to have no recollection. True, he was drunk and that explains a lot, but I think the writers also wanted us to realize that he's a bit dumb. Buddy represents the small town simpleton which Mavis escaped by moving to the big city. If you notice, he's not particularly ambitious (all we see him doing is taking care of the baby) and we wonder if he even has a job or any goals in life. He's totally clueless to Mavis's heavy flirting throughout the movie, flirting that's so obvious you can see it from space, so we can assume he's not exactly a bright character. His entire personality is to go with the flow.
So I think this was an important scene that showed what the town of Mercury is like. As Matt's sister says near the end, these people don't matter. Even the central character Buddy is so empty that he'll forget his marriage and kiss another woman, only to forget the kiss the next day. Even at the end when she tries to kiss him a 2nd time, he is outraged for about 10 seconds, then forgets all about it and goes back to the party. It highlights the frustration Mavis feels with the entire town.
