讨论 The Farewell

I was unimpressed by Awkwafina's much-praised performance. She had just one expression throughout the film and what's with her perpetually hunched shoulders? She's better here than in Crazy Rich Asians, in which I found her unbearable, but by toning down her extrovert personality she came closer to being catatonic.

The film is perfectly watchable but felt derivative and I only laughed once (the cigarette moment during the grave scene). 5/10

I found the film to be incredibly boring.

I just saw it for the first time a little while ago. In a film rife with effective performances, Awkwafina and the woman playing her grandmother gave my favorite two. The dude playing her father impressed me, too, simply in the way that he used his facial expressions. I suspect I was a bit more impressed by the film than you were. The movie is loaded with interesting ideas and moves at a rather brisk pace, translating into what I feel is a fresh voice from Ms. Wang. I laughed more times than you did, apparently.

Say, murray, would you be able to tell me what those brown patches on Billi's back were about?

I'm probably going to rate this film pretty highly.

Yeah, I thought it was very good. I find a lack of laughs to be an unusual criticism as it's not really the sort of film you go into expecting Dumb and Dumber. I get that it's supposed to be kind of humorously amusing in bits but it's more of a mood piece. You don't need to find it funny to enjoy it.

Yea, well, it is described as a comedy -- on IMDb for sure. If you get it, you get it - if you don't, you don't. The Farewell - 7.9/10.

Anyone with the name "Awkwafina" shouldn't be expected to really do much.

She touched on that issue in her EP In Fina We Trust: "Who the fuck is Awkwafina?"

They are from the 'cupping' she had at the spa.

Watched it yesterday, I give it a 7/10.
