Discuss Three Thousand Years of Longing

The movie is done masterfully and it looks incredible, very impressive. The feeling of exotic fairytale was channeled here storywise also very well, Some directors just know how to tell a story without bs and George Miller proved long time ago he knows how to do it.

However, the weakness here is in the script, as we are led through the background stories and magical characters towards something that will redefine the main character's life. And when this moment arrives and we expect a big payoff, apparently it's just... meh. Narratively it's more or less clear why she made the wish she made, but personally I found it a bit naive and primitive. I wouldn't even mind something that will lead to a negative or tragic consequences, and although it was not corny and eyerolling, still it was not satisfying as a closure.

I like that type of movies, sort of magical realism or realistic fairytales. Similar vibe was in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Big Fish (or any other Tim Burton movie). Terry Gilliam also have done few of these. So I enjoyed it, but I wish (lol) the ending would've been somewhat different.

i dont understand the ending...

Well, the entire movie was sort of exploration what will be the perfect wishes to ask in such case. We see through all the characters that personal desires affect their wishes and they eventually fail in some way, or do not satisfy the wisher.
And Alithea wanted to hear all the stories of failures to understand what she is planning to wish. All wishes were selfish and greedy, requested by these people for themselves only. She decided to make a half selfish wish that considers someone else as well, thus both releasing the Djinn and also keeping him around, but not as a servant, more like a partner. Djinn also had selfish side, and she freed him from that as well. That's how I interpreted that, and as I said it's naive and primitive.

As I see it, all great directors when they get old, incline towards primitivism as philosophy. Simple life, no greed, just minimum to live as simple as possible. I think Miller is going through that phase. Hopefully he will snap out of that for the next Mad Max.
