Jean Picard, un criminel français devant être exécuté, est sauvé fortuitement par un bombardement allemand. Le train qu'il emprunte est saboté par la Résistance et les Allemands exigent le coupable sinon ils fusillent des otages. Jean Picard va se dénoncer sur la suggestion du policier à ses trousses afin de se racheter.

In occupied France, a convicted thief and murderer escapes the guillotine when a bombing raid strikes the prison, but is quickly re-captured by the inspector of the Surete responsible for his original arrest. Fearing the guillotine more than his actual death, the convict inveigles the inspector to help him with a plan to rescue 100 Frenchmen taken by the Gestapo following an act of sabotage: he will confess to being the saboteur and allow himself to be executed by firing squad, the Gestapo's method of execution, thus freeing the 100 men.

Picard, un condenado a muerte, se fuga de la cárcel, pero es capturado de nuevo. Mientras tanto, una vía férrea vital para los intereses alemanes es saboteada. Los nazis, como represalia, toman 100 rehenes franceses y amenazan con ejecutarlos si los aliados no entregan al saboteador. Picard se ofrecerá para hacerse pasar por el saboteador con el fin de liberar a los rehenes y, al mismo tiempo, salvar su vida.
