讨论 Knives Out

Has no one ever seen (or read) an Agatha Christie story? They are all convoluted donuts within donuts. This story is no different, other than being even more complicated. If your looking for a realistic police procedural, this ain't it. But if you want a mansion filled with wealthy suspects who hate each other and a "gentleman detective" who is smarter than the police, Then sit back grab your popcorn and enjoy.

I couldn't care less about the police investigation, but I can only excuse so much. This story seems to have been written by a moron:

Nobody suddenly commits suicide when they're also making notes for future story ideas, sitting on a fortune, and coincidentally still even functional after a 100mg morphine injection. And cutting ones throat? Really?

Who meets up with a known killer with a lot to lose in a private, remote location indoors??? If we've learned anything from a hundred years of movies and tv shows, it's that you always meet an adversary in a public place with a lot of people around. She may just be a housekeeper, but nobody is that dumb.

Also, how are we to believe a private nurse who's given the same injections to the same patient in the same room probably hundreds of times would suddenly, accidentally mix up her vials?

Of course those are all ridiculous! I agree.

But that is exactly what makes an Agatha Christie story.

Death on the Nile has the villain shoot hole in the floor, pretend he was shot, everyone leaves him alone then he runs down to the victims cabin kills him runs back up to the lounge wraps a gun in shawl shoot himself in the leg and throws the gun overboard. If you can accept that why wouldn't you be able to accept a man who thinks he is dying commit suicide to protect the nurse who is caring for him?

As for the last part, that is covered in the movie. The labels were switched.

I think it's a little weak to suggest that she gave Harlan the right medication just because she knew, without looking at the label. Especially after they were dropped on the floor. The first thing she'd do would be to look at the vials before drawing the medication out.

Another thing I notice when rewatching some of this is the housekeeper's reaction to a lethal dose of morphine is ridiculous. People don't gasp and suddenly wake up when over dosed with morphine. She would go to sleep and that would be it. And it wouldn't take long.

And all that dumb donut hole talk, ugh. Tedious.

I am not suggesting that this is a perfect movie. But it is a lot better than the grief people are giving it.

I have seen mix ups like she had with the medicine happen in real life often enough to say it is reasonably believable. Although, the nurses that I know generally hold to higher standard of professionalism.

As far as a morphine overdose reaction, you seem to have more knowledge about that than I do. I've seen plenty of screen plays where the writers get basic facts wrong. It' the nature of the beast.

A far as the donut hole talk, yeah I agree. Through out the movie there were nods to other mystery stories: The detective says they live in a Clue board or the Mom watching Murder She Wrote. I think the donut thing was one of those, but I can't place it.

It's lazy. I'm not a fan of lazy writing.

Neither am I. But if I used that as standard, I'd stop watching movies altogether.

Yeah, might be why I like bio pics so much lately.

I go the other way. I relish finding mistakes. It make me feel...superior.

Maybe they should watch sports instead... just don't tell them that there is fakery there as well with PEDs and such...

Wait!...What!?!? WWF is not completely honest?

I think this is the draw for most folks who like murder-mystery...the feeling of being clever. I mean, come on--the guy's name was Ransom! #toldyaso
