Discuss Transamerica

In the photo on this site Bree is coming out of the men's room instead of the ladies. Too bad they didn't touch more on that in the movie because I've heard some transsexuals have horror stories about that. One said she was cited and put on a sex registry for using the ladies room.

I worked at a place once where a person was going through their transition. There was a lot of anger, I remember, about how they were going into the women's restroom. Everyone was up in arms about it being dangerous, wrong, etc. I don't think this particular case ever was seriously a safety issue to be honest. There were a lot of off color jokes and derogatory comments made by people on the staff that worked in the office with me. I chose to ignore all of this, and just treated the person like a human being. The person later thanked me for just being cool to them, and not judgmental like so many others were. I know it had to be messed up for them some nights on our shift.

Later, I worked at another place, where I guess the company was more "progressive". When we were all there for orientation, the guy giving us a tour of the building said, "Choose a restroom to use." This was a huge contrast from about 6 years earlier, with someone more or less being told to use the men's room, even though they were a transitioning MTF.
