Seems I missed a bit when I dozed off! I'm surprised there was no campaign of outrage at a guy called Khan being played by said "pasty English guy".

I guess in the original series it made sense for a Mexican actor to play Khan?

Remaking one of the best Trek films was a sore mistake, right from the off. There just wasn't any way that taking something as incredible a Wrath of Khan, and turning it into some derivative new-age popcorn action flick, was going to turn out well. I imagine that's why Ambrams hid the fact that the bad guy was Khan, and flat-out lied when people asked him if that's the way he was going with it. He probably knew that nobody really wanted a remake of an already-great film, so he figured if he just billed it as something original, and slopped some post-modern shit over it, maybe it would go better. But it's rated 74 here and 7.7 on IMDB, and made more than double its production budget, so that gives one the general idea of what the movie-going audience will accept and pay for, and thereby what will continue to be made.

Yup. I imagine Mr Roddenberry would be spinning in his grave at what his universe is becoming.
